FAQ: Martec Fans

What is a Summer or Winter Setting?

All Martec Ceiling Fans have a Summer/Winter reversible feature. This allows for the direction that the fan blades rotate in to be changed at the flick of a switch. In Summer the Ceiling Fan is switched to the Summer setting on the Ceiling Fan and the blades will rotate in a clockwise direction generating a cooling breeze, and in Winter the Ceiling Fan can be switched on to the Winter setting and the blades will rotate in an anti-clockwise direction pushing the warm air accumulating up high against the ceiling back down across your ceiling along the walls and back down to the ground level, to keep the room warmer and reduce heating costs by up to 10%.

What is the difference between a 3, 4 or 5 blade Ceiling Fan?

The number of blades on a fan has nothing to do with efficiency, making it a matter of personal design taste, rather than a decision of performance. The performance of a ceiling fan is determined by 3 main factors:

  • 1. Motor speed (RPMs)
  • 2. Blade design & pitch (angle of the blade in relation to the motor)
  • 3. Distance between Ceiling Fan blades and the ceiling

Martecs highest performance Ceiling Fan is the Precision series due to the powerful motors, and 23 degree blade pitch, which will therefore move a significant amount of air, however the down side is that they will produce a little more air movement noise than a timber bladed fan.

What is pitch?

Pitch is the angle of the blade in relation to the motor, the greater the pitch the greater the movement of air volume.

Are some Ceiling Fans more powerful and quieter than others?

Another important consideration to look at when purchasing a Ceiling Fan is the power (RPMs) of the motor. Motors are measured in watts, often indicating how powerful the motor is however the RPMs of the Ceiling Fan will very depending on the resistance on the motor caused by the length and pitch of the blades. The speed of the motor, along with the rest of the design, can have an impact on how the Ceiling Fan operates and the noise it creates. All Martec Ceiling Fan motors include lamination reduction technology for quiter operation, and all milled edges not pressed. All of our start run capacitors are doubled sealed and then temperature treated to ensure smooth speed transitions, and ensure whisper quiet operation.

What is the difference between Metal and Timber Blades?

Ceiling Fans with metal blades generate a slightly higher level of air movement noise, due to the finer leading edge of the blade slicing the air, and therefore are not recommended for bedrooms. Timber blades are ideal for bedrooms as they produce minimal noise. All Martec timber blade sets are electronically factory balanced and sealed, and are constrcuted from solid New Zealand plywood, not MDF. This will prevent a sag developing in the blades after time.

Do Ceiling Fans with metal blades rust?

All Martec metal bladed Ceiling Fans are rust proof treated prior to a protective UV powder coated paint being applied, this reduces the likleyhood of rust, however if the Ceiling Fan will be in an area where it is exposed to salty air or moisture it is advisable to use the Martec Precision 316 Ceiling Fan range, the ENTIRE exterior of this Ceiling Fan including all screws, are constructed from High Grade 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel.

What is a Hang Sure Canopy?

Hang Sure Canopies (sometimes referred to as Cathederal Canopy) allows the Ceiling Fan to be hung from a sloped or cathedral ceiling. They also allow the Ceiling Fan to find its own true centre of gravity, which reduces wobbling and noises caused by undesired wobbling. All Martec Canopies have also been designed to house any remote control receivers inside them with as much space as possible to make the installation as easy as possible for the electrician.

What warranty is available on Martec Ceiling Fans?

All Martec branded Ceiling Fans are covered by our industry leading 3 YEAR FULL IN HOME WARRANTY. This covers parts and labour not just parts like other warranties out there on the market. However to keep your warranty valid the Ceiling Fan must be installed by a Licenced Qualified Electrician.

How much will it cost to install a Ceiling Fan?

Ceiling Fans must be installed by a Licenced Qualified Electrician. This will vary from each individual electrician, and depending whether the Ceiling Fan is wall control or remote control. Remote control Ceiling Fans are generally cheaper to install, as there is less wiring involved.
